From Zone12

Jump to: navigation, search

The basic idea of a wiki is that anyone can edit any of the pages. I figured this would work well for zone12 because there's really no reason all of us couldn't just contribute to the site. For this wiki, you have to have a login to do any editing, but once you've got a login you have access to pretty much all the pages. Click on the "edit" link up in the right hand corner and you're good to go. It'll open up a html form where you can edit the contents of the page. If you want a new page, you can use the link under "Navigation" on the left.

This site has been made with MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia and others. It's big, robust, has a bunch of features that I haven't even fully explored, and overall should do what we want. If it doesn't, Terri is pretty sure she can hack in any feature we might need, because the code doesn't look too bad to work with.

Editing

For help on Editing, see Help:Editing. It sounds much more complex than it really is -- basically, you hit the "new page" or "edit" links, it'll give you the page in an edit window, and you can change the text. If you mess up, you can change it again. All the changes are logged, so it's easy to revert to previous versions if you accidentally delete a page or something.

Who Can Edit?

The site is currently visible to the public, but only zone12 members who've gotten accounts from Terri can change pages. However, any zone12 member can change any page, so if you notice someone else made a typo or you want to add a second recipe for Peanut Butter Cookies then you can just change the page, adding on as you desire.

What can you edit?

You can edit any of the contents of the page, but unfortunately, right now it's not easy to edit the menus and such. I think right now you can make a user-configurable menu to go in the side, but there's no way to change that menu for everyone. Well, except for the category menu (see below).

Categories

With the default zone12 skin, you get a listing of categories in the menu. The idea here is that these will be the sections of the site: Category:Recipe, for example, holds the recipes that the group wants to share. I (Terri) suspect we'll have things like Category:Review for reviews, Category:Link for neat links we want to share, and maybe sub-categories so that you could have links to news articles, links to games, links to videos, etc.

With the current colour scheme, blue links are new ones, green ones are visited ones, and red ones are links to pages that don't yet exist. So you'll note that some of those categories listed in the previous paragraph don't yet exist (at least at time of this writing). Feel free to add them! To put a document into category, you just put [[Category:categoryname]] into the document. Any time a category has documents, it'll show up in the category listing.

For more information on categories, see Wikimedia's help on categories

Skins

You may note that in your user preferences page, there's several different skin options. Yes, you'll be able to make your own. No, I'm not writing a tutorial right now. Search mediawiki for more information on how these work.
